Differential susceptibility of Russian thistle accessions to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides

چکیده
Molecular information suggests that Russian thistle (Salsola tragus L.) in the US may consist of more than one genetic entity. This genetic variation needs to be taken into account when developing agents for biological control of this important weed. Preliminary evidence suggests that there are differences in susceptibility of Salsola sp. to infection by fungal pathogens. In the present study, an isolate of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, a pathogen of Russian thistle collected in Hungary was tested for its ability to infect and damage California accessions of S. tragus (referred to as Type A) and the related S. tragus, Type B. The minimum dew period and temperature required for infection of S. tragus with C. gloeosporioides was determined to be 12–16 h and 25 °C. Both Type A and Type B were susceptible, but C. gloeosporioides caused greater damage and reductions in biomass of Type A than of Type B. Fresh weights of Type A and Type B were reduced from controls by 60 and 9%, respectively, after inoculations with C. gloeosporioides. Results from this study illustrate the importance of understanding target plant taxonomy in biological control evaluations. Author

Comparative Transcriptomics Reveals Differential Gene Expression Related to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Resistance in the Octoploid Strawberry
The strawberry is an important fruit worldwide; however, the development of the strawberry industry is limited by fungal disease. Anthracnose is caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and leads to large-scale losses in strawberry quality and production. However, the transcriptional response of strawberry to infection with C. gloeosporioides is poorly understood. In the present st...
متن کاملThe Effect of Temperature on Spore Germination, Growth and Appressorium Formation of Colletotrichum Gloeosporioides and Dothiorella Aromatica
Conidial germination of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Dothiorella aromatica was affected by temperature. The optimal temperature for germination was between 25 and 30°C. No germination occurred at 5 and at 40°C respectively. C. gloeosporioides produced appressoria in vitro while D. aromatica produced long germ tubes without appressoria. Appresorium formation was more sensitive to temperatu...
متن کاملSpecies of Colletotrichum associated with citrus trees in Iran
Colletotrichum species are associated with citrus plants as pathogens, saprobes and endophytes. According to the most recent multigene phylogenetic analysis, a lot of changes were happened in the taxonomy and species delimitation in the genus Colletotrichum. In this investigation, 292 Colletotrichum isolates were obtained from leaves, fruits and stems of Citrus species at Golestan, Mazandaran, ...
متن کاملPhenotypic and molecular characterization of Colletotrichum species associated with anthracnose of banana (Musa spp) in Malaysia.
Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum species is a common postharvest disease of banana fruit. We investigated and identified Colletotrichum species associated with anthracnose in several local banana cultivars based on morphological characteristics and sequencing of ITS regions and of the β-tubulin gene. Thirty-eight Colletotrichum isolates were encountered in anthracnose lesions of five local ...
متن کاملResistance of Strawberry Cultivars to Crown Rot Caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Isolates from Florida Is Nonspecific
Colletotrichum crown rot of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne) can be caused by any of three fungi, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (teleomorph Glomerella cingulata), C. fragariae, or C. acutatum (17,27). The closely related species C. fragariae and C. gloeosporioides produce a reddish-brown necrosis of crown tissue following infection that causes plants to wilt and collapse (27). Under g...
